Phyllis Agyapong, LCMFT

Phyllis Agyapong (she/her/hers) is a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist (LCMFT) in Maryland. Phyllis is a level-2 certified Gottman Couples Therapist and a certified Bringing Baby Home educator. Additionally, Phyllis is trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Phyllis provides counseling for couples, adults, and families.

Phyllis strives to help couples, adults, and families improve communication, trust, and security in their relationships. She works collaboratively with clients to find their strengths and build upon them to overcome their difficulties. Phyllis identifies what is already working well for the client and helps them build skills they can implement and use in their everyday life.

Phyllis has experience working with several presenting problems, including anxiety, depression, attachment concerns, self-esteem, grief, trauma, and life transitions. When working with individuals, Phyllis uses Solution Focused Therapy and Narrative Therapy which helps clients identify their strengths. These strengths are used to rewrite the client's story to reflect a more accurate view of themselves, their capabilities, and their purpose. Phyllis offers clients a safe environment where they can be open, vulnerable, and challenged as they work to achieve their goals. She brings her expertise to the table while the client brings their experience, and together they work towards lasting change.

Phyllis is also a skilled couples therapist and works with infidelity, premarital counseling, sex and intimacy issues, blended families and more. When working with couples, Phyllis often uses Gottman Couples Therapy to provide tools to improve communication and increase intimacy, respect, and affection in relationships. Phyllis also utilizes Emotion Focused Therapy to help couples identify negative cycles and replace them with behaviors that can help the relationship thrive. Overall, Phyllis helps couples turn disagreements into opportunities for connection.

Phyllis takes a systemic approach when working with all clients. She looks at clients on an individual level, as well as how they relate world around them. Phyllis believes therapy is a personal experience. Therefore, she strives to adapt her approach to each couple, individual, and family.

Phyllis received her Bachelors of Science in Family Science from Towson University. She went on to earn her Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Purdue University. Phyllis was born in Ghana, West Africa, and spent her childhood there.
